If you’re a Rogers subscriber you probably won’t be too happy at this news, but it seems that Rogers has finally decided that it’s going to implement charges for incoming SMS. As such, from July 7th onwards, folks who don’t have a monthly messaging bundle will be hit 15ยข for message received. It’s not a lot of money on its own, but if you’re the type of person who receives a lot of text messages, you might want to look out for a messaging plan.

Did you ever stop to wonder why the text messages you send are limited to 160 characters per message? Did you think that it was just some carrier-imposed restriction to milk more money out of us consumers? Well, there is actually quite a bit of history related to it, and it’s all thanks to a man called Friedhelm Hillebrand who lived in Germany. Basically he was the one who decided that 160 characters was enough to convey a message wirelessly. You can check out the whole write up here.

Boost Mobile’s $50 per month free for all has certainly received overwhelming response, so much so that Boost Mobile doesn’t seem to be able to keep up, causing excessive text message delays. The issue has been acknowledged, and there will supposedly be a fix in place by May 7th. For the sake of Boost Mobile’s subscribers, we certainly hope that they will get things sorted out as soon as possible.

Looking forward to recording and playing 1080p high-definition videos on your mobile phone? Well, with the release of the Renesas SH7370 chip, we’re one step closer to having high-definition content on our mobile phones. The chips are already shipping to manufactures, and are only about 1cm square, which is impressively small, considering its abilities, not to mention on-chip Dolby Digital 5.1 channel output. Mobile entertainment certainly looks like it’s moving forward at an impressive rate.

T-Mobile’s Sidekick LX still isn’t available if you didn’t pre-order it, but at least you have an updated pricing for the device now. The device will be going for $249 after a rebate and with a 2-year contract, whilst if you were loyal enough to pick it up during the pre-sale, you would have enjoyed the $199 price. Maybe sometimes it does pay to be an early adopter.

Folks who are addicted to Twitter in Canada must certainly have felt awful when the SMS service was disabled in Canada. The good news is that Rogers has just announced a partnership with Twitter which will revive the SMS service, allowing users to both send and receive tweets via text. The new deal even applies to both Rogers and Fido customers.

It looks like Pennsylvania-based Money Warehouse, Inc. is in hot water, after Verizon filed a lawsuit against it for sending unsolicited messages using an autodialer to its customers. Verizon alleges that at least 800,000 wireless spam messages promoting mortgage products were sent to Verizon Wireless customers and employees since February 2009. The Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act prohibits the use of an autodialer to call wireless phones. It’s certainly good to see that Verizon Wireless is taking steps to reduce the amount of spam that its subscribers receive via text messages, which can certainly be a pain.

A glance at the T-Mobile Vairy Touch and you’ll be forgiven for thinking that it’s a HTC Touch. The good news is that this phone will only set you back about $75. While the device might physically look like a HTC Touch, the user interface is totally different. In terms of hardware, the touchscreen is reportedly quite good, albeit it takes quite a bit of pressure to activate, which is often a common problem with cheaper resistive displays. Would you pick one of these over a HTC device?

One of the things that we can’t wait to have on our mobile phones is Firefox Mobile, after all, we’re hoping that it bring what it did for desktop browsing to the mobile scene. Aside from the already known features such as geolocation and gesture browsing, it seems that Firefox Mobile will be getting automatic website login as well, via Weave sync. It will handle OpenID, along with the normal username/password login method.
