It’s still a rumor, but it’s a rumor that doesn’t bring many smiles to our faces. According to the rumor, AT&T has been quietly reallocating its EDGE service to its weaker 1900MHz band, which means that we’ll get a much weaker coverage. This certainly isn’t good news for users who aren’t using 3G phones. To make matters worse AT&T’s 3G network isn’t all that fancy either, with many users having lots of 3G network problems in certain areas. Hopefully this rumor isn’t true, though it’s not that hard to imagine a network operator doing such a thing, especially if it helps to cut costs.

Bored of Windows Mobile, but don’t want to get a T-Mobile G1? Well, a video of Google’s Android running on HTC’s Touch HD has surfaced. It sure seems like Android is popping up on all sorts of devices nowadays, and we certainly aren’t complaining about that. The video quality isn’t good, but that’s almost customary of these videos. Hopefully the day where we’ll be able to swap the operating system on our mobile phones at will isn’t all that far away.

Even though the BlackBerry Bold has received some impressive reviews, its high return rate (said to be well above the average) and constant technical issues (unexplained crashes, poor reception etc) has prompted Orange to contemplate dropping the BlackBerry Bold for good. Note that this is after the phone was pulled once in October and re-released with an updated firmware.

Ever coveted a Windows Mobile smartphone? Now you can own one. With the tag line “My Very First Smartphone”, the i200 Windows Mobile Standard smartphone was released some months ago. Aimed at the low-end market, the price of the smartphone has been lowered to make less of a dent to the wallet. At £190 (about $295), you get a HSDPA device with a 2.3 inch QVGA screen, 2MP camera and Windows Mobile Standard, though it unfortunately does not include Wi-Fi support, and the 3G support is only on the European 2100 MHz band.

There isn’t any official confirmation just yet, but rumor has it that Sprint is preparing to launch the BlackBerry Niagara, which is a CDMA variant of the popular BlackBerry Bold 9000. Japanese company NEC has announced the development of software for mobiles that can automatically recognize the spoken word and certain phrases with a relatively high speed and accuracy.
The new software independently provides automatic interpretation from Japanese to English and vice versa. Thus eliminating the need for network connections or outside servers. Additionally, the software only takes moments to recognize a word or phrase before the interpretation is suitably displayed.
