Just another Cellphones News weblog

We knew that the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G was going to be announced this month and, well, the smartphone is now finally official.

Sadly, T-Mobile USA will only sell its second Android handset starting early August. However, the carrier’s current customers will be able to pre-order it as of July 8 and thus receive it sometime later that month. The smartphone’s price is of $199.99 with a contract agreement for two years.

As expected, the MyTouch 3G will be offered in three color versions: white, black and merlot.

T-Mobile MyTouch 3G official

Unlike its predecessor (T-Mobile G1), MyTouch 3G doesn’t have a hardware keyboard, so it’s slightly thinner.

The new smartphone obviously features stuff like Google Search by voice, Google Maps with Street View, YouTube and Picasa access and so on. It is highly customizable (including apps like Sherpa) and it comes with a 4GB card in the box.

Other than that, the specs of MyTouch 3G are similar to the ones of HTC Magic: 3.2 inch touchscreen display with 320 x 480 pixels, GPS, Wi-Fi and a 3.2MP camera with autofocus and video recording.

The official website of T-Mobile’s MyTouch 3G can be accessed here.

    T-Mobile Sidekick LX Announcement

We heard a few days ago that there was going to be a T-Mobile event held on April 21st, and quite naturally, we were hoping that it was Android or BlackBerry related. Unfortunately it’s neither, but the announcement of the Sidekick LX isn’t too bad either, though it’s certainly nothing to surprising, considering that almost everybody on the planet knew the phone was already coming. Those of you who have been looking for a replacement for your current Sidekick, mark down the date on your calendars.

    Skytone Netbooks Powered By Android

It looks like Google’s Android isn’t going to be content to be available just on mobile phones, as it’s moving to netbooks as well. A Chinese company is looking to bring technology to children in developing countries with its Skytone line of products. The rumored price for its netbooks is $99, which is certainly interesting. Windows and Linux might just have a rather strong contender muscling its way into the netbook market, which can only be good for consumers.

Symbian Ported To Run On Atom

We’ve seen many people put Google’s Android platform on netbooks, both for fun and for research purposes. Now it looks like the folks over at Symbian don’t want to be left out, as they’ve managed to compile and run a S60 Symbian build on one of Intel’s Atom reference boards. Of course, we’re not sure if anybody would want a Symbian-powered netbook at the moment, but it’s certainly good to see the Symbian folks looking into the possibility of it.

    Samsung Android Phones Coming?

If you were wondering why Samsung has been rather quiet on the whole Android issue recently, Elizabeth Woyke of Forbes.com brings you good news, as she reveals that Samsung is planning to release several Android-powered device this year, the first of which will show its face in June. The bad news is that the first Samsung Android phone will supposedly be launched outside the U.S, though folks in the US will be able to choose from two Android devices before the year is out, and they’ll even have different form factors, though they’ll be on different carriers.

HTC Magic UK Launch On May 1st

Word on the street is that the HTC Magic will be launched in the UK on May 1st, making it the 2nd Android device to go on sale. Users should be able to pick up the device for free if they agree to a £25 contract or higher. Though there aren’t any specific details of data plans, it’s assumed that there will be unlimited data packages being offered to users too. In case it slipped your mind, the HTC Magic will have a 3.2 megapixel camera, capacitive touchscreen, HSDPA, and GPS, albeit lacking the physical QWERTY keyboard like the T-Mobile G1.

    Motorola Evoke QA4 Announced

Motorola has certainly been floundering recently, and it’s certainly been looking to Google’s Android platform to save its bacon. Until Motorola actually comes out with an Android-powered device though, it looks like the Evoke QA4 will have to fill the gap. At a glance, it looks a lot like a cross between Apple’s iPhone and the Palm Pre. The device features a 2.8-inch touchscreen, but will the phone be able to stand up against the hi-tech phones of today? Somehow we don’t think so.

  • Dell

You’ve probably already heard about Dell’s plans to enter the smartphone market.

Previous reports said the company would launch its very first smartphone in September 2009, but it looks like this may not happen so soon.

Barron’s quotes Shaw Wu, Kaufman Bros. analyst, who says that Dell presented Android and Windows Mobile handset prototypes to several mobile carriers. The result? The carriers were not interested in the devices because they “lack differentiation” when compared to smartphones coming from HTC, Nokia, Samsung and other major manufacturers.

Even so, it’s said Dell will work further on designing and re-designing one or more smartphones which will “likely involve vertical integration of some sort, including software and/or services.”

In order to succeed in designing a good handset, Dell considers “making acquisitions” – so we might soon see a company or two being bought by the giant computer maker.

Now let’s hope that, when finally released, Dell’s smartphones will be attractive enough for us to say “wow”.

    Samsung Android Device Pictured?

We’re used to seeing blurry images of various leaked devices, but it’s certainly not every day that you get close-up pixelated pictures of rumored devices. Apparently this Android-powered Samsung device was unveiled at a Samsung dealer show over in Amsterdam. Word is that the device will have a capacitive touchscreen, 528MHz processor, a fair amount of internal storage and microSD card expansion. The phone will supposedly have quad-band GSM and be available in UMTS 900 and UMTS 2100 for the US and Europe respectively. Are you looking forward to an Android-powered Samsung device?
