Just another Cellphones News weblog

Without much fanfare, Nokia has just announced its newest Eseries smartphone, the Nokia E52.

If you expect a revolutionary design from the E52, don’t. The new phone is just an E55 without a QWERTY keypad. So, yeah, it’s a slim candybar with a 2.4 inch QVGA display.

Like the E55, Nokia E52 is said to have an “impressive battery life” which should provide a talk-time of up to 8 hours with a single full-charge. It also comes with GPS, a 3.2MP camera, Ovi Services, noise cancellation and “the new email UI from the Nokia E75”.

Moreover, Nokia E52 supports HSDPA for up to 10.2Mbps and HSUPA for up to 2Mbps.

The handset has two color versions, silver and brown (like the 5MP E71i, perhaps):

Nokia said the E52 would be available starting the second half of the year, for a retail price of around €245 ($325).

Here’s a hands-on video with the Nokia E52, from Nokia Conversations:

    Sony Ericsson Xperia Growing Panel

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Panels is certainly an interesting concept, but you generally don’t see too many innovations on it, unlike the seemingly unlimited number of iPhone applications. The Growing Panel for the Xperia is certainly one of the rare innovations for the Panels interface, and an interesting one at that. Instead of using the boring old icons to notify you, it has an interactive garden on your Panel, which uses different methods to notify you. For example, the flowers in the center of the panel would represent, emails, text messages and phone calls. The bloomed flower indicates that you have a missed on. The single stem plant on the left indicates the battery life, and when the phone is plugged in, there will be a glow at the bottom of said plan. There are a few other different notifications, so it certainly looks interesting. It looks like something that everybody would happily download and try out.

Apple iPhone To Get OLED Displays?

It’s nothing official at the moment, but word on the street is that Apple might have chosen a series of OLED displays for its next round of handsets. Such a move would certainly be in the best interests of battery life, as the iPhone isn’t noted for its battery capabilities. Considering the amount of new features that were announced in the iPhone 3.0 firmware update, it would be fairly practical to have a capacitive OLED display in the future. What do you think?

  • Fast Charging Battery In A Few Years

Fast Charging Battery In A Few Years

Battery technology has been rather frustrating over the last few years. We’ve seen cooler and cooler mobile phones that do more things, but it seems that battery life is something that handphone manufacturers haven’t improved on, with the possible exception of Phillips’ line of Xenium phones. Now folks over at MIT are working on a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged within seconds. This sure is a huge step forward, especially if you compare it to the few hours that are needed to charge our current batteries to their full level. These new batteries could be smaller and lighter than the standard type, which could indicate that it might be a big hit for mobile phones.

    Unidata SQ-3000 WiFi Phone

Unidata has unveiled its new SQ-3000 Wi-Fi phone, a device that is also slated to appear at CeBIT 2009. The SQ-3000 supports features such as high-resolution video telephony, and we’ve got no complains with that, as long as it doesn’t affect the smoothness of the video as you might not always have a fast and stable Internet connection. Features of the SQ-3000 include:

    2.8″ touch screen display with 240 x 320 resolution
    Wi-Fi connectivity
    30 fps video recording/playback
    G.722.2 Wide-band audio codec
    Conference call capability
    MP3/MP4 playback
    XHTML browser
3 hours of video calling, 6 hours of voice calling (in terms of battery life)

  • Nokia E55 Goes Official At MWC

Nokia E55 Goes Official At MWC

At a glance, Nokia’s E55 is quite similar to the E75, though it’s much lighter due to the lack of the sideways-sliding QWERTY keyboard. Just because Nokia ditched the sideways-sliding keyboard doesn’t mean that there isn’t a QWERY keyboard for you, as Nokia has taken a form factor similar to the BlackBerry Pearl where there are 2 alphabetical letters on each key. The only downside of this phone is its relatively low resolution 320 x 240 screen, which only serves to make its 470 Euro price tag seem expensive. Aside from that, features of the device include:

    S60 Platform
    HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g
    116×49x9.9mm, 98g
28 days of battery life in stand-by mode (Nokia’s numbers)
    2.4-inch display (320×240)
    60MB of internal memory, 2GB micro-SD included (16GB max)
    3.2 MP camera
    3.5mm audio jack
    2 Colors: White and Aluminum

HTC Diamond 2 At MWC 2009

Mobile World Congress 2009 sure is giving us a lot of new phones, some of which have us all drooling. It’s hard to ignore HTC’s devices at MWC, and its newly-unveiled Diamond 2 certainly looks sleek. One of the more useful updates to the device is the longer battery life (about 50% more), 3.2-inch high-resolution wide-screen VGA display (800 x 480), 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, gravity sensor, ambient light sensor and 13.7mm thickness. The HTC Diamond 2’s TouchFLO 3D will offer users a touch experience that has been optimized for one-handed use. Expect the Diamond 2 to be available in Europe and Asia in early Q2 of 2009, and global availability later in the year.

    HTC Touch Pro2 Unveiled

A glance at HTC’s Touch Pro2 is all you need to take interest in it. With features like a high-resolution 3.6-inch widescreen VGA display, sliding QWERTY keyboard, improved battery life, expandable memory, 2 speakers, 2 microphones, touch-sensitive zoom bar, gravity, ambient light and proximity sensors, HTC sure looks like it has a winner on its hands. One of the stand-out features of the Touch Pro2 is Straight Talk, which gives users an integrated email, voice and speakerphone experience, allowing them to transition from email to conference calls via its new acoustic design that uses asymmetric speakers, noise suppression and full-duplex acoustics. Of course, the success of this device will be determined by its sales figures, and we’ll see how it goes when it’s available in major global markets in early summer.

    Solar Powered Phone

Anyone up for a self-rechargeable cell phone? Okay, so maybe there isn’t one on the market yet. But you can make your own, by flexing your DIY muscles and following the instructions here. The aforementioned instructions teach you how to add a supplemental solar panel to your handset. This is great for those who want to do their part in going green. Though keep in mind that as solar panels aren’t all that efficient, they won’t provide a big jump in battery life, but help to prolong your battery life during everyday use. This DIY project works best with selected handsets where there is plenty of space at the back, and phones with a sliding lens cover aren’t recommended because of interference with the total solar panel area available. It is recommended to have a certain amount of DIY prowess before starting this project.
