The North American version of Sony Ericsson W995, namely the W995a, was recently approved by the FCC – which means the phone might be soon launched in the US and Canada.
Codenamed Sony Ericsson Hikaru, the W995 / W995a is SE’s second handset that has an 8MP photo camera. Despite this, it’s not a Cyber-shot phone, but a Walkman one.
So, besides the nice photography-related features, the W995a also comes with a 3.5mm headset jack, Walkman 4.0 player, shake control, TrackID, stereo FM radio, stereo speakers and stereo Bluetooth.

No word yet if the W995a will be picked by a North American carrier (AT&T, Rogers?), or if it will be sold unlocked. In the second case, the slider will probably be quite expensive.

After the Ontario government implemented the federal and provincial sales tax into a single 13% HST, Bell announced that this would allow them to invest an additional $1.5 billion in Ontario, in order to increase their services. George Cope, the President and CEO of Bell said:
“BCE has already committed to invest approximately $3 billion across Canada in 2009, and about $1.5 billion of that total will be spent in Ontario. Even in the midst of current economic conditions, we’re making these multi-billion investments in our team, our broadband networks and our service operations in order to deliver a better Bell customer experience at every level. As has been the experience in other provinces in which Bell operates, savings from a single sales tax structure will accelerate our investment in Ontario. Fewer dollars going toward taxes in 2010 mean more dollars that Bell will reinvest in our networks and service in the province next year.”

We’ve just received an e-mail from High Road Communications, saying that one of the company’s clients is launching a new device in Canada.
With this occasion, High Road uploaded a teaser video on YouTube with said device, asking us (and you) to guess what it is.
From the video, we know the handset has a touchscreen and it’s pretty thin.
Also, it features a 5MP autofocus camera with face recognition, it can quickly upload pictures and videos to Facebook and it “balances the books and crunches numbers”.
Here’s the video with the device (censored most of the time):
I’ve done a bit of research on High Road Communications and found out that it only has one handset maker among its clients – and that’s LG.
Which might mean the mysterious phone is LG Arena, or a slightly different version of it, especially built for Canada.
Regardless of what it is, the handset seems really cool, and Canadian mobile users will probably be happy to have it in their country.

All might not be rosy in the world of BlackBerry users. Reports are flooding in that users across the US and Canada are experiencing serious BIS issues, which means that it isn’t working. Rogers users over in Canada and many AT&T and Verizon customers seem to be complaining about intermittent service interruptions or even worse, not being able to access their email. Is your BlackBerry OK?

BlackBerry Niagara 9630, one of RIM’s unannounced new smartphones, was spotted in two live pictures which confirm its existence, as well as the fact that it’s a bit bigger than the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and a bit smaller than the BlackBerry Bold.
The Niagara 9630 is a CDMA device, so we’re looking at a Verizon / Sprint release for the US and a Bell / Telus one for Canada.
In fact, the smartphone is already said to be launched by Verizon in May, but we’d better wait for an official confirmation on this.
Anyway, here are the pictures, courtesy of CrackBerry:

Feature-wise, BlackBerry 9630 should come with a 480 x 360 pixels display, EV-DO rev A connectivity, A-GPS and a 3.2MP camera.
Well, now there’s nothing left to do than wait for RIM to go official with this new smartphone, right?

Messaging phones (you know, the ones featuring QWERTY keyboards) are becoming more and more popular all over the world, and especially in the US and Canada.
Now, who do you think is leading the North American messaging phone market? It’s not Research in Motion, although all its BlackBerries have QWERTY keyboards.
It’s LG, the world’s third largest handset maker, which managed to sell about 11.8 million messaging phones in North America in 2008 only.
Overall, there were 33.7 million such phones shipped in North America last year (smartphones included), thus LG controls a third of the market.
The latest messaging phone from LG is Verizon’s LG Versa, a touchscreen handset that has a detachable QWERTY keyboard and can be bought for as low as $199.

With the new Pre smartphone and the equally-new webOS platform, both announced by Palm at the beginning of January, many have wondered what would happen with the PalmOS platform.
Well, there will be no more PalmOS, at least not on new Palm devices.
According to PreCentral, Palm’s Ed Colligan has just stated that the Sunnyvale company will no longer release devices based on PalmOS – save for the rather outdated Centro, which will be launched by new carriers during 2009.
In return, Palm will focus on Windows Mobile and webOS, the latter platform being the one that powers the well-received Palm Pre.
And speaking of the Pre, the handset is said to reach Canada, Latin America and Europe sometime in the future. Of course, as already known, the Pre will be first outed exclusively by Sprint, in the US (with the possibility for other US carriers to release it, but only starting 2010).

That CDMA BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230, which is said to hit Canada sometime soon, will be outed in the US too, by none other than Verizon Wireless.
And the proof for this is an image that leaked over at CrackBerry Forums, which shows the Pearl Flip bearing Verizon’s logo.
Sadly, a release date and a price were not given, so if you do want the 8230 from Verizon, we can’t tell you yet when and for how much it will be available for purchase.

I’m sure you’re already familiar with the GSM Pearl Flip, so you know that the image above doesn’t show the smartphone’s true face (i. e. the handset looks nicer in reality).
Anyway, until Verizon decides to get official with the 8230, I guess this picture is all we have.
