Hands-off with Palm Pre GSM

After all the buzz Palm Pre got during CES and after that, Palm’s presence at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was a yawner.

Yes, they had a working GSM version of Palm Pre, and they were showing off various WebOS features to the public. But that’s about it.

No European launch announcement, no info about possible European partners and they did not even let us play with the darn thing. All we could do is watch the demo performed by a specially trained company reps.

What a treat…

Well, just in case you are not yet fed up with YouTube videos of Palm employees showing of WebOS features on Pre, here’s our own version:

And here’s some Palm Pre GSM pictures from the demo stand:

  • I don’t really understand why on earth Motorola exhibits at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

This is the second year that I visit their stand and they don’t have a single interesting thing on display.

Just these plain old lame phones we are seeing again and again. And when I asked Motorola rep on the stand why don’t you have anything new here, he said: “Well, you know, we announced something at CES, so now, maybe, we’ll do something at CTIA…

No wonder they are having troubles and losing marketshare and tons of money quarter after quarter.

The best they had on display in Barcelona was MOTOSURF A3100 phone – their version of a full touchscreen handset. And I can’t say anything good about it.

The interface is lame, touchscreen non responsive enough, and, compared to the things being announced here…, well, nothing to write home about…

    Here’s a video demo for Motorola A3100:

And here’s some live pics of it:

  • Orange has just unveiled that it will be the first carrier to release LG’s unique G910 Touch Watch phone in Europe.

Coming as the European version of LG D910, the LG G910 will surely attract many customers, if not for its specs, at least for the fact that it will be the first watch phone to be sold by a major mobile carrier.

We’ve seen the D910 at CES 2009, and most probably the G910 looks the same – so there you have some live pics with it (just hit the “D910 at CES 2009” link).

    lg-watch-phone

The LG G910 is only 13.9 mm thick and features the following:

    • A 1.43 inch touchscreen LCD
    • HSDPA connectivity
    • Video-calling capabilities
    • MP3 player

Sadly, the release date of LG G910 was not yet unveiled by Orange (a “later this year” was mentioned), and neither its price.

  • After CES 2009 we hear the term “watchphone” and immediately think of a certain wristwatch phone, but this particular watchphone is a little different.

In fact, many of you may recall Canada luxury phone maker Mobiado releasing the Professional 105GMT Gold Luxury Watchphone just a couple months ago, complete with 24-carat gold coating — and now we have news of the second in the Luxury Watchphone Series, the 105GMT White.

Rather than being a wristwatch with a built-in phone, the 105GMT White is a phone with 2 built-in mechanical watches on the bottom of the phone — and the phone won’t actually fit on your wrist.

    a105gmt_white

Whereas the 105GMT emphasized 24-carat gold materials, the White emphasizes sapphire Crystal. The front and back  of the White are made of sapphire crystal; the buttons of the White are made of  sapphire crystal as well, which makes the front surface made entirely of the same material. Even under the removable sapphire battery cover, the movements are protected by a second sapphire plate.  This gives the 105GMT White a total of 274 Carats of sapphire crystal in all.

    aindex_en_gmt_white

Here’s what the 105GMT White has packed under the hood:

    • Quad-band GSM/EDGE and WCDMA 850/2100
    • 1 GB internal memory
    • 2 MP Camera with video capture
    • Bluetooth
    • MicroUSB
    • 2″ display with 16 million colors
    • Music player supports MP3, AAC, and eAAC formats

We haven’t heard any announcements on pricing or availability yet.

    So, any takers?

  • Palm At MWC 2009

    Palm At MWC 2009

Palm certainly did a good job at CES, but did it show all its cards? Well, there are some folks who managed to stumble upon a site at https://palmmwc2009.com, though you’ll be required to enter a username and password. When Palm found out about it, it mentioned that the site was only meant for Palm’s own intranet, but was accidentally made available. So will Palm actually be doing anything special at MWC? We’ll have to wait and see. The leaked site is now unavailable (at time of writing).

  • If you’re in the UK and don’t like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic but still want a touchscreen Nokia handset, you should wait for the end of March to come, when it’s said that the brand new N97 will be released.

The online retailer Play.com lists the Nseries smartphone as “due for release on 31/03/2009”, with the price tag of 479.99 GBP (about $708).

That’s surely a hefty price, but let’s not forget that N97 is not only the first Nseries to have a touchscreen display, but also the one that offers the widest range of features – you can read about them here.

Of course, the March 31 release date might be pushed back, but at least we know that the UK will get the new Nseries sometime this spring.

In case you want to see a set of live pics with Nokia N97, you can check out the UnwiredView report from CES 2009.

  • Kogan Agora Delayed Indefinitely

    Kogan Agora Delayed Indefinitely

When Kogan showed off the working prototype of its Android-powered Kogan Agora at CES, most people were hoping that it was a sign that it would be available rather soon. Unfortunately for Android fans out there, Kogan Technologies has delayed the launch indefinitely, and it’s citing “potential future interoperability issues” to be the root cause of the delay. The Agora was initially set to be sold in 2 versions, the Agora and the Agora Pro, though it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we see this device in stores.

  • OpenMoko Android FreeRunner

    OpenMoko Android FreeRunner

You’ve probably heard that OpenMoko’s Neo FreeRunner is capable of running Android, though that probably won’t be the OS that the phone will be shipped with. The phone was on display at the OpenMoko booth during CES and even had Android installed on it, giving users who want to tinker with the phone a bit more than usual. Surprisingly the Neo FreeRunner doesn’t have a camera, but hopefully OpenMoko will get busy and add a camera to the phone in the future.

  • Following the announcement of Palm’s power-packed Pre smartphone at CES, rumors about Dell’s impending launch of its own smartphone were sparked. This comes mostly from the fact that it’s been about two years since Dell hired the Motorola exec known as the force behind the RAZR phone, Ron Garriques.

Analysts pin either the 3GSM or the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona as the place where Dell would most likely announce its smartphone plans. The smartphone market is getting crowded really fast, and Dell’s entry will most certainly not be a walk in the park.

As for Dell’s smartphone OS pick, it would likely be Windows Mobile, because of the huge ties it’s got with Microsoft in the PC business. The open-source Android OS would also be a good choice, but hints say that is highly unlikely.

And while that OS is one very important thing, the device’s design will also be crucial to its success. The iPhone is very popular, as it is functional as it is sexy. So is the recently launched Palm Pre. Dell will have to think about making those two products look badly designed compared to its own smartphone to get any attention these days, at the very least.

  • HTC Has A Great New Phone

According to a senior executive of Telstra, HTC will release a new touch phone which will be a direct competitor of the iPhone and the recently released Palm Pre. After reviewing the Palm Pre at CES, Telstra’s executive said that the new HTC phone is “better and more functional”, though such a statement certainly isn’t surprising, considering that it’s coming from a Telstra executive. The new touch phone is supposedly developed using a combination of the Google Android operating system and Linux based software written by HTC. The executives from Telstra believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Palm Pre, though of course, we’ll judge that after the phone has been announced (and released).
