Firefox Mobile On Nokia N810

Fennec Beta 1 walkthrough from Madhava Enros on Vimeo.

The Windows Mobile version of Fennec (Firefox Mobile) might have run into a problem or two, but the version of Nokia’s N810 seems to be working fine, as you can see from the video below. The good news is that the Windows Mobile Fennec team has sorted out the memory allocation issues, so it’s a step forward for Firefox in the mobile browser wars.

  • After launching several alpha versions of Fennec, Mozilla has now introduced the first Beta edition of its mobile browser, called Fennec 1.0 Beta 1.

Currently available only for the Maemo platform (Nokia N810), Fennec 1.0 Beta 1 comes with many speed and performance enhancements and it can be used as the primary browser on a N810 device.

Fennec has lots of features from Mozilla Firefox for desktop - like support for Flash videos (so you can watch YouTube, for example).

Also, add-ons are available, including a Weave Sync add-on (downloadable from here) and a gesture add-on.

To download the beta Fennec on your N810, you must go to Mozilla’s official website. Of course, if you don’t have a Nokia N810, you can still try the Fennec 1.0 Beta 1 via your Windows, Mac or Linux computer.

Below you have two videos, with the general presentation of Fennec 1.0 Beta 1 and with the gesture add-on’s features:

Palm Treo Pro To Get IE Mobile 6

Good news for those who are planning to pick up Palm’s Treo Pro from Sprint when it’s released on March 15th. Aside from getting a cool phone, you’ll find that the device has been bundled with the IE Mobile 6 browser, which was originally expected to be released on Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. It will be fairly interesting to see how well Microsoft’s IE Mobile 6 stacks up against the likes of Opera Mini, Safari and the soon-to-come Firefox (for mobile devices).

  • Fennec Will Be Called Firefox

    Fennec Will Be Called Firefox

We’ve been calling it Fennec for such a long time, and in case you’re not sure what we’re talking about, it’s the mobile version of Firefox, that should be released in the near future. In terms of its name, word is out that it will be called “Firefox”, nothing more. So maybe we can ditch the “Firefox Mobile”, “Mobile Firefox” names and just continue to pray that it will be released sooner rather than later.

  • Fennec Weave Will Sync Your Tabs

Fennec Weave Will Sync Your Tabs

The latest version of Weave now supports Fennec, which is great news for folks who hate to have to try and remember what they were last browsing on their desktop. Weave can sync your open tabs between Firefox on the desktop, and Fennec on your mobile device. Of course, you’re not forced to re-open all your browser windows that were open on the desktop, rather you have the ability to access the tabs that are open on synced browsers and open local copies. The UI of this is currently still a work in progress, but as long as development is going smoothly, we’ve got no complaints. Hopefully this will be completed sometime soon, and in time for when Fennec really gets some momentum.

Iris From Torch Mobile Scores In Acid 3

How well does your browser do on the Acid 3 web standards test? Chances are, not too good. Torch Mobile has a rather unpopular Iris browser, but while the browser isn’t as enticing as Opera Mini, it scores an insane 97/100 in the Acid 3 test using the webkit browser engine, which is certainly a lot higher than the 72/100 that the iPhone’s Safari achieves. If Torch Mobile were to pretty up the interface a bit, we might have another serious contender in the mobile browser scene. Of course, we’ll have to remember that the pre-alpha release of Fennec (Firefox Mobile) has been announced.

Fennec For Your HTC Touch Pro

Firefox fans out there (who own a HTC Touch Pro anyways) can rejoice, as Mozilla has announced the first milestone release for Fennec, which is as we all know, the mobile version of Firefox. As we mentioned, the current build that they’re offering for download only supports HTC’s Touch Pro at the moment, so you’re out of luck if you’re using another phone. Hopefully this milestone release will help Mozilla get useful feedback on the browser and help them turn it into the final product sooner rather than later.

  • After what seemed like ages, Apple has finally approved the use of third-party web browsers for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. And there isn’t just one. There are at least four third-party web browsers for the iPhone available for download at the App Store as of this time’s writing.

One of the newly approved third-party iPhone web browsers is the Edge Browser (pictured below), which offers a full screen view of web pages to maximize the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display. It looks great, and what’s more, anyone can download it for free.

Others web browsers are also available for download for a fee, like WebMate ($0.99), which takes pride in offering tabbed browsing, and Incognito ($0.99) which offers untraceable browsing.

This is great news for the iPhone development community, but the question is, when will we see the third-party web browsers that we have all been waiting for? I’m talking about mobile Firefox and Opera, of course. And if Google can create a Chrome-like browser for the iPhone, too, then all the better. Throw in mobile IE in there, even, why don’t you?

Previously, it looked like seeing all those heavy-duty mobile browsers on the iPhone was impossible. Well, obviously, not any more. Unless this–approving third-party web browsers for the iPhone–is some kind of mistake on Apple’s part, which I really hope it isn’t.

    Google Android Tattoo

Lots of people love to tattoo brands on their body. We’ve got some people doing Apple or Firefox tattoos and who knows what else. Now we’ve a girl who tattooed the little green fellow that Google uses as Android’s logo on the inside of her wrist. We’re fond of Google’s Android, but would certainly think twice about putting it on our wrists permanently. Do you have any brand logos tattooed on yourself? Drop us a comment to let us know what you think.

  • Fennec Alpha 2

    Fennec Alpha 2

Mobile Firefox is getting closer and closer to a release, especially since Fennec Alpha 2 was released recently. It’s still an early developer release, meant for testing purposes only, but it’s definitely moving forward. Developers focused a lot on performance in the Alpha 2. Mozilla is planning to release a public Windows Mobile build in late 2008, and a final release in 2009. If that is the case, they don’t have too many days left in 2008, but whatever development goes into Fennec, we just hope that it will be released as soon as possible.
