Windows Mobile 6.5 Arriving In May

Windows Mobile 6.5 Arriving In May

It looks like the official introducing isn’t going to be too far away, as word is out that Microsoft will be rolling out its highly-anticipated Windows Mobile 6.5 on May 11th, which incidentally, is the opening day of Microsoft’s TechEd 2009 conference. Of course, just because the official announcement is made, doesn’t mean that we’ll be getting Windows Mobile 6.5 on every upcoming device that is released will automatically be pre-loaded with Windows Mobile 6.5. It might even take a few months before manufacturers come up with phones that are pre-loaded with Windows Mobile 6.5, but until then, keep your fingers crossed.

  • Microsoft Office for iPhone?

    Microsoft Office for iPhone?

It seems that Stephen Elop, President of Microsoft’s Business Division has an eye on Apple’s iPhone. But rather than make an enemy of the iPhone (which it probably already is), he’s looking to get Microsoft Office on the iPhone. He didn’t mention exactly when the software would be hitting the iPhone, he did tease and say “not yet, keep watching”. We’ll watch and wait of course, but that doesn’t mean that we’re just going to sit back and ignore perfectly good competitors like Documents To Go and QuickOffice.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Gets New Theme

It looks like personalization is the next big thing that Microsoft will be offering on its Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. An announcement from Microsoft states that it will be partnering with two prominent design houses, which are the Design Museum London and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The first designer to be featured will be Isaac Mizrahi, who is a fashion designer and television personality. There will also be a new Theme Generator which will allow users to select pictures from their PC to be converted to their device’s wallpaper, and it even allows users to adjust the color of the navigation bar, scroll bar, and highlighted text. Are you looking forward to customizing your Windows Mobile device?

  • No Charge To Update Your Apps On Windows Marketplace

Microsoft looks like it has taken a hint from developers and announced that it will not be charging developers for updates to software applications that are submitted to the Windows Marketplace. It was initially reported that developers would have to pay to even update their applications, which caused a lot of negative responses towards Microsoft. Developers obviously weren’t happy, and users were worried that developers would just not update their apps in order to save costs, and thus bugs would not be fixed. Microsoft also announced that 25 popular developers will be supporting and releasing applications for the Windows Marketplace when it’s launched. Applications will be available from FaceBook, AP Mobile, MySpace, Accuweather, CNBC, EA Mobile, SPB, Pandora, Sling Media, and more.

  • Hewlett-Packard, the largest computer maker in the world, could soon come with Netbooks based on Android.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a team of HP programmers is currently testing Google’s versatile platform “for a potential Netbook”.

Nothing is decided yet, but if the company indeed launches one or more Android-based Netbooks, this will indirectly affect Microsoft, which licenses Windows OS for most of HP’s computers.

HP won’t have to pay anything for using Android (since it’s an open source OS), so a Netbook based on it would be cheaper than a Windows one.

All in all, it looks like Android is getting more and more recognition, even from companies that don’t manufacture cell phones. And that’s a good thing, right?

  • LG To Focus On Windows Mobile

LG To Focus On Windows Mobile

While LG recently dabbled in the netbook market, it looks like the Korean cell phone maker has decided that it will stick to its strengths, and that’s coming up with cool mobile phones. The main focus of the company will be the low cost touch screen cell phone market, which means devices that are going for £100 without a contract, or free on £10/month contracts. Considering that LG recently signed an agreement with Microsoft to come up with 50 Windows Mobile phones over the next 3-years, it’s fairly safe to say that some of the phones that will be released by LG will be powered by Windows Mobile.

  • Windows Mobile Widgets

    Windows Mobile Widgets

We’ve been seeing Widgets on the leaks of Windows Mobile 6.5 for such a long time, so it’s really no surprise to see that Microsoft has gone official with its Widgets, and will be calling it Windows Mobile Widgets. These Widgets will be powered (partly) by the new Mobile Internet Explorer 6, giving them access to both Flash and ActiveX controls. Widgets can be written with standard web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, AJAX and JavaScript, which means that we should see a healthy supply of Widgets in the future, which is certainly a good thing.

  • You probably already know that Samsung i8910 Omnia HD will be released with Symbian S60 5th Edition on board and not with Windows Mobile (like the first Omnia – the i900).

A few days ago, some leaked info unveiled that we might see a Windows Mobile 6.5 Omnia HD as well, in addition to the Symbian one.

However, this will not happen after all.

Quoting some reliable sources from Korea, ms mobiles says that Samsung picked Symbian over WinMo for the Omnia HD because of Microsoft’s delay in launching Windows Mobile 6.5. Seems fair enough.

Another interesting fact is that Samsung wants to launch more handsets from the Omnia family and some of them will run on Android. Perhaps that Samsung Android smartphone that we recently saw will be Omnia-branded. We’ll see.
