Firefox Mobile On Nokia N810

Fennec Beta 1 walkthrough from Madhava Enros on Vimeo.

The Windows Mobile version of Fennec (Firefox Mobile) might have run into a problem or two, but the version of Nokia’s N810 seems to be working fine, as you can see from the video below. The good news is that the Windows Mobile Fennec team has sorted out the memory allocation issues, so it’s a step forward for Firefox in the mobile browser wars.

  • Nokia 5330 XpressMusic, the new slider officially announced last week, will apparently be released by T-Mobile – probably in both the US and Europe.

The phone was recently spotted in a black/blue color version (unseen until now), with T-Mobile’s logo on it.

According to Cell Phone Signal, this version should be introduced in the US in June or July.

T-Mo USA already has two XpressMusic handsets (5310 and 5610), and the new 5330 should be a perfect replacement for them.

    nokia-5330-t-mobile1

Nokia said the 5330 would have a retail price of 160 Euros ($210), so let’s hope that, with a contract agreement, the slider will be offered by T-Mobile for under $100.

The features of 5330 (plus a hands-on video) can be seen here.

  • We knew the Nokia 7205 Intrigue is part of Verizon Wireless’ 2009 line-up, but we had no clue on when it could be released.

Now it looks like Verizon plans to out the mid-end clamshell on March 15. Well, at least that’s what a leaked stock sheet appeared at Engadget says.

The price of Nokia Intrigue is not specified, but it shouldn’t be too high if you get it on contract.

Verizon aside, there’s some good news for AT&T’s users as well.

    intrigue-e71x-lg-zenon-jackfrost

First we have a so-called Jackfrost, which is said to be launched by the big blue carrier on March 29. There’s no mention about its manufacturer, but it looks like the handset is the Windows Mobile 6.1 Samsung i627:

    (image via Mobile Mag)

Nokia E71 should also be released by AT&T, on April 1. The Eseries smartphone appears as “E71 Charcoal”, so it’s most probably the E71x we saw in live pics back in November.

Furthermore, there’s an LG Zenon coming to AT&T as well, on April 10. This sounds like that LG Xenon we saw a while back, so you should expect it to pack a sliding QWERTY keyboard.

And finally, the leaked sheet also says Sprint will start selling the Palm Treo Pro on March 15, but that isn’t a secret anymore.

Firmware To Save The Nokia 5800 NAM?

It looks like there is some good news for folks who are having problems with their new Nokia 5800 NAM phones. If you’ve been following the recent events of the phone having problems connecting to 3G networks, then you’ll need to hope that the updated firmware will be released by Nokia soon. Word on the street is that the solution to this could be a firmware update, which will certainly come as a huge relief to many 5800 owners as that means they won’t have to exchange their mobile phones. The Nokia 5800 NAM initially came with a v11 firmware, so we’ll need to see what updated firmware Nokia comes out with, and hopefully that will be the solution to the problem.

  • Usually, a year’s fourth quarter is the one when mobile phone manufacturers register the highest number of sales. That’s not the case with Q4 2008, when the global mobile phone market fell 12.6 percent when compared to the same period of 2007.

Well, that’s actually not a surprise, given the current economic situation around the world.

IDC reports that, during the last quarter of 2008, there were 289 million handsets shipped worldwide, while in Q4 2007 there were 330.8 million units sold.

Despite this, the whole 2008 brought a 3.5% increase, with a total of 1.180 million (1.18 billion) phones outed by handset manufacturers.

    nokia-phones

To sum it up, here are the complete numbers and percentages related to mobile sales in Q4 2008:

    • Nokia: 113.1 million units shipped, 39.1% market share
    • Samsung: 52.8 million units, 18.3% market share
    • LG: 25.7 million units, 8.9% market share
    • Sony Ericsson: 24.2 million units, 8.4% market share
    • Motorola: 19.2 million units, 6.6% market share
    • Others (including HTC, RIM, Apple etc): 54.0 million units, 18.7% market share

Expectations for 2009 are somewhat bleak, manufacturers believing that it might even be a tougher year than 2008.

  • Nokia’s list of acquisitions has just got bigger today, as the Finnish company announced it will buy, for an undisclosed sum, the Berlin-based bit-side GmbH.

In Nokia’s words, the acquisition will allow the handset manufacturer to “strengthen and accelerate its mobile development for Nokia Maps”.

Bit-side GmbH is a small company (only 39 employees) that provides software and services for a wide range of mobile phones, mainly in the entertainment and imaging sectors.

Nokia and bit-side GmbH have been working together for some time, apparently on developing and integrating social and location related services

    nokia-bit-side

Among the latest products from bit-side GmbH is a Plazes app for iPhone. This helps iPhone users to access Plazes geo web services – services which are offered by Nokia, since it acquired Plazes AG last year.

Another interesting development of the German company is the so-called Mobile Dashboard technology, which allows you to stay connected to Facebook, Myspace, Flicker and others.

Bit-side GmbH is also the developer of PanoMan, a Symbian S60 app that can generates panoramic images of up to 40 pixels.

After the acquisition is complete (sometime this quarter), the above mentioned stuff will obviously belong to Nokia, with bit-side being swallowed by Nokia’s Services unit.

  • If you’ve been missing some good-old-times Nokia leaks, here’s exactly what you need: plenty of info about a brand new, unannounced handset.

It’s the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic, which was already previewed in Russia, by Mobile-review, although Nokia mentioned absolutely nothing about it until now.

The 5730 is a combination between an Eseries smartphone and a regular XpressMusic handset, so it’s no wonder that it looks similar to the E75, of which we’ve heard last year.

The most interesting fact about the new 5730 is that it has a full sliding QWERTY keyboard. It’s said that the handset will be available for an affordable price (€220), which means that it will be a cheap alternative for devices like Xperia X1 or HTC Touch Pro.

Of course, cheaper also means fewer features. And speaking of them, here’s what Nokia 5730 XpressMusic has to offer:

    • A 2 inch display with 240 x 320 pixels and 16 million colors
    • GSM/EDGE connectivity (no 3G, apparently)
    • A 3.2 MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and flash
    • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
    • 140MB of internal memory and an 8GB card
    • Up to 26 hours of music playback
    • Up to 4.55 hours of talk time
    • Up to 270 hours of standby time

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic should be officially announced this month, but it will only be available across Europe starting April.

  • Nokia announced today that it has teamed-up with Securitas, a Sweden based company, in order to bring security services to its S60 GPS-enabled handsets.

Leveraging on the fact that more and more phones have built-in GPS, Nokia and Securitas will implement a suit of services called Securitas Safe-2-Go.

This is comprised of four sub-services that will allow users to “get help in an exposed situation”, as well as to benefit from “increased security through information regarding the location of friends and family.”

The four components of Securitas Safe-2-Go are:

    • Assist, which lets you connect to Securitas alarm central with just the touch of a button
    • Find, which can tell you the current position of a friend
    • Zone, for receiving text messages when someone comes into or leaves from a predefined area
    • Friends, which provides an overview of where all your friends are located at a given moment.

Mobile users in Sweden will be the first to try Securitas Safe-2-Go, as the service will be released there, by mid-2009. After that, other European countries will follow.

  • If you’ve got a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, you can let your inner Picasso come alive using this nifty new application that’s been released for Nokia S60 5th edition devices. It’s called Mobile Paint, and it works exactly as advertised.

Using the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s touchscreen display as a canvas, a user can draw an infinite number of things he can think of with the help of Mobile Paint. This is said to be just an “example” application, but it looks like it works real fine as a mobile paint app.

It can be downloaded straight from the Forum Nokia web site, and is contained in the SIS folder of a designated ZIP file. (download link).
