Just another Cellphones News weblog

Sprint has just announced that a revamped version of its pretty old Motorola i580 iDEN rugged phone is now available.

The new handset comes in a “highly visible yellow” color, and it also brings a more powerful battery: a 1130 mAh one, which can provide a talk-time of up to 200 minutes.

Other than that, we’re talking about the same old phone. In consequence, you should know the i580 is certified to Military Standard 810 F for shock, vibration, dust, solar radiation, temperature extremes, low pressure, blowing rain, salt fog and humidity.

The specs of Motorola i580 include:

  • 1.9 inch TFT internal display with 262K colors and 176 x 220 pixels
  • White STN external display with 96 x 32 pixels
  • Nextel Direct Connect, iDEN 800/900 MHz
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • MMS
  • 1.3MP camera
  • MicroSD card support
  • 3.8 x 2.2 x 1.1 inches
  • 5.1 ounces

The yellow Motorola i580 can be bought from Sprint right away, for $119 with a 2-yr contract agreement.

  • Motorola EM330 Music Phone Coming to AT

A phone overlooked by everyone for almost a year, we just received word in the form of official press release that Motorola is releasing its EM300 (aka “Ischia”) music-centric phone on AT&T soon.

Last we heard from this phone, it had been approved by the FCC in July 2008, and finally has made its way onto a US carrier. The specs, however, are a little different than when this phone was originally announced.

As we can tell, it looks as though the major focus of the EM330 will be in the music. We’ll get into the specs shortly.

    First, behold the visual feast.

    moto-em330frontmoto-em330open

The pictures here are very similar to the ones leaked when the EM330 went through the FCC, only the interior is white instead of blue.

Some highlights of the EM330 include:

    • Touch-sensitive external screen (much like the V9, we assume)
    • 1.3 MP Camera with video capture
    • FM Radio with RDS
    • “3D Sound” Surround-sound quality
    • EQ with 11 pre-set genres included
    • 3.5 mm headphone jack
    • Stereo Bluetooth
    • Tri-band EDGE (no 3G from what we can tell)
    • Crystal-Talk Technology
    • Dedicated music key
    • 20 MB internal memory, MicroSD up to 2 GB external memory

We know, we know — groundbreaking stuff here. But it should appeal to some music junkies out there, especially the 2 GB external memory.

From what we can tell, the EM330 will likely have a quiet launch and it will be interesting to see what kind of shelf life this phone has. At any rate, be prepared to feast your eyes on this beauty at AT&T stores sometime in Q2 2009.

  • Motorola KRE8 is a new phone concept that, if ever built, it would be among the weirdest handsets out there. Needless to say, it would also be quite distinct from the MOTOROKRs currently available on the market.

At first sight, the device looks like a portable media player, but it’s actually a full-touchscreen phone that should have 3G, GPS and lots of advanced music features.

Designed by Jose Tomas DeLuna, the KRE8 would come with three pre-loaded modes: Instrument Mode, Record Mode and Mix Mode. These can be activated and controlled via the large touchscreen display.

One of the coolest things about the Motorola KRE8 is that you can literally split it in two pieces. After doing so, each piece uses its own accelerometer for detecting the gestures you make. This way, you can use the device as an instrument simulator – guitar, violin or drums – and simply start creating music.

The music you make can be recorder in MIDI format and shared via the handset’s wireless connection.

Of course, this is only in theory, as I’m not sure how it would all work if KRE8 had been a real music phone.

  • Fake Android Powered Motorola Device

    Fake Android Powered Motorola Device

You might have been hyped up over the supposed leaked images of an upcoming Android-powered Motorola phone. The bad news is that it’s really just a Photoshop job, combining the Moto ROKR E8 and the MOTOZINE ZN5 together. It did a good job of fooling many people around the globe though. Some of the red herrings that indicate that this is a Photoshopped picture include poor cloning at the bottom right corner, the microphone hole, and a couple of other little things. It looks like Motorola is still searching for a way to dig itself out of the current financial crisis.

  • Mobile-review continue their raids on some secret vault with press pics of upcoming Motorola phone models.

This time it’s turn for Motorola A455 (Rush2) QWERTY slider that is headed for Verizon network.

As usual, not much info on the actual specs of Motorola Rush 2 A455. But available press pics show an interesting device, which, with current popularity of messaging phones, can actually do quite well.

If it is released within reasonable timeframe, not in 2010.

    motorola-rush-2-a455

From the available pictures we can see that Motorola Rush 2 A455 will be a CDMA/EV-DO phone with navigation services, Bluetooth and built-in camera of some sort. The dialer app also indicates that MOTO Rush 2 will have a touchscreen.

    Motorola RAZR LuK Phone

Motorola looks like it isn’t ever going to give up its RAZR line up. The RAZR LúK looks similar to the original RAZR, though this latest luxury 3G handset has a keypad that is plated with 18k gold and sports a pearl white exterior and HSDPA connectivity to help you with your Internet duties. Nothing innovative here, which is rather disappointing. Hopefully Motorola will be able to come up with something that will be really revolutionary, if it wants to save itself anyways.

  • Motorola i465 press photo leaked

Remember that Motorola i465 iDEN phone, which showed off its full QWERTY keyboard in a blurry picture about a month ago?

Well, it turns out that Moto has revamped it and probably wants to officially release it any time soon.

The i465 didn’t look too attractive last time we saw it, but now we have a press photo of it – and I must say the handset is really interesting, having a fairly nice design for an iDEN device.

Feature-wise, the phone is said to have Bluetooth 2.0, a photo camera (VGA, apparently) and Web browser (with a dedicated key). Plus, of course, Push to Talk capabilities.

    motorola-i465

No word yet on when Motorola will actually launch the i465, but this should happen via Sprint Nextel in the US.

  • A new Motorola ROKR phone has just appeared in some leaked photos, looking pretty good and casting a ray of light on Moto’s future.

The leaked handset doesn’t have a name for the moment. However, it resembles the Motorola E10 Texel, which was first spotted back in the autumn of 2007 but never got the chance to be officially announced – thus now it’s probably cancelled.

If we speculate a bit, this new phone could be called Motorola E11 or Motorola E12.

Anyway, regardless of its name, the handset looks like this:

    motorola-rokr-1

    motorola-rokr-2

    motorola-rokr-3

    motorola-rokr-4

Its display seems to be a touchscreen with a resolution higher than the standard 240 x 320 pixels one. What’s almost sure is that those three keys situated right under the display are touch-sensitive.

The handset’s photo camera looks like it’s a 3.2MP one.

Other details about this new Moto ROKR phone are currently missing, but, hopefully, Motorola will announce it soon.

  • For unknown reasons, Motorola hasn’t released any touchscreen phones with a display resolution larger than QVGA.

Even the 2.8 inch display of the brand new MotoSurf A3100 comes with only 240 x 320 pixels. Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you can’t say more pixels aren’t cool.

Fortunately, it looks like Moto’s first high-resolution touchscreen phone is in the making, and we might see it soon in an official announcement.

Some images with said phone have appeared over at Engadget, and, if they indeed represent a real device, then Motorola could have a winner on this one.

    motorola-touchscreen

The handset’s rumored specs include a 5MP autofocus camera with Kodak lens and Xenon flash, TV-out and (obviously) a large touchscreen.

Now let’s wait for further details to emerge, while hoping that the device is not just a photoshop-made one.

  • Last time we heard about Motorola Ruby (or RAZR3), the phone was said to be cancelled.

Now we’ve got some press shots with it, and we also know that its official name is (or it should have been) Motorola VE1.

Moto Ruby VE1 was rumored to run on Symbian UIQ 3, and the interface we can see in these new pics surely looks like it’s a UIQ one.

The thing is that, with the establishment of Nokia’s Symbian Foundation, UIQ is no longer under development, this being one of the reasons why Motorola cancelled the RAZR3 in the first place.

    motorola-ruby-ve1-razr3

    motorola-ruby-ve1-razr3-3

    motorola-ruby-ve1-razr3-2

So what’s the deal with these Ruby VE1 press photos? Could it be that the phone will be launched after all? Or perhaps Motorola wants to keep Ruby’s hardware and try to put an OS developed by the Symbian Foundation on it?

Well, if it will do it, you should know that Ruby has a 5 Megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity – which, obviously, are nice features for a clamshell.

Anyway, until something official about this comes out, the phone remains as it was – cancelled.
