LG GD900 Crystal Goes To UK

LG GD900 Crystal Goes To UK

If you previously caught sight of the LG GF900 Crystal back at MWC 2009, you’ll probably have been captivated by its transparent keyboard, which certainly makes the phone have a luxurious and classy look. Folks over in the UK should be able to pick up the device in mid-May, as Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that they will be releasing the device on said date. The GD900 will sport LG’s S-Class Touch UI, 8-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, TV-out and Dolby Mobile audio technology. On top of that, the display and transparent sliding keypad should support multi-touch input and handwriting recognition.

  • Presented at MWC 2009 only as a concept, LG GD900 is now functional and, according to LG, it will be presented at CTIA Wireless this week (April 1 – 3, Las Vegas).

The main attraction of GD900 is, of course, its transparent, glass-made sliding keypad, but the handset has much more to offer.

It will come with LG’s S-Class Touch UI (like the Arena KM900) and a 3-inch touchscreen display that seems to have a WVGA (480 x 800) resolution.

The phone’s display supports several finger gestures, i.e. if you draw an M on it, the MP3 player will be launched; or, if you draw a circle, you can adjust the music volume.

    lg-gd900

Starting May, LG GD900 will be available for purchase in Europe and Asia. Its price was not announced, but it will probably be higher than the one of a regular touchscreen phone.

  • LG Arena officially launched in Europe

LG’s latest and greatest KM900 Arena multimedia phone is now officially launched in Europe, although the South Korean company didn’t mention how much the device will cost.

We already know there are more than 1 million Arena phones pre-ordered, thus LG probably hopes the handset will be at least as successful as Viewty (the 5MP full-touch phone sold in more than 5 million units).

The KM900 Arena is not a smartphone, as it runs on LG’s 3D S-Class User Interface. However, it’s loaded with lots of cool features, including: a 480 x 800 pixels touchscreen display, a 5MP autofocus camera, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Dolby Mobile, a 3.5mm headset jack, DivX and Xvid support, 8GB of internal memory and so on.

    lg-arena-europe

Starting this month (March), LG Arena will be on sale “in major European markets”, in two color versions: silver and black titanium.

Until you get the chance to see it in stores, you can check out our LG Arena video report from MWC 2009.

  • Windows Marketplace for Mobile, Microsoft’s own app store, was announced during MWC 2009, but with little details about how software developers would be able to create and sell applications.

Today, Microsoft has come up with more info about Windows Marketplace, unveiling the fact that developers will get to keep 70% of the sales revenues.

However, for submitting apps, you need to pay a $99 annual tax, which allows you to submit up to five apps per year. An extra of $99 is required for each app you want to submit in addition to the five ones included in the annual tax.

The Redmond company also said it wants to provide “transparency throughout the certification process”, as well as “guidance and support from the stage of development to the final sale to the consumer.”

    windows-mobile-handset

If you know your way around Windows Mobile apps, you can go to Microsoft’s website and get the needed tools to start developing.

Initially, Windows Marketplace for Mobile will be available in 29 countries. It will most probably be activated at the same time with the release of the first Windows Mobile 6.5 devices.

  • Telefónica and its subsidiaries (Movistar and O2) have apparently managed to strike a deal with Palm in order to exclusively sell the eagerly-awaited Pre smartphone in the markets where they operate.

According to the Spanish website Expansion, the giant international carrier will sell the Palm Pre in Spain, Latin America and the UK (via O2).

Reportedly, Movistar should launch the smartphone in Spain and several Latin American countries before the summer – but this has not been officially confirmed.

Of course, pricing details are currently missing, but Palm’s brand new smartphone will probably be offered for a wide range pf prices, depending on each country and each contract agreement.

    palm-pre-closed

Since Telefónica is mainly a GSM/HSDPA operator, its Palm Pre will be the GSM one we saw at MWC 2009.

As for the CDMA Pre, its release date is yet to be confirmed – but it’s a fact that it will be introduced by Sprint in the US, and probably by Bell and/or Telus in Canada.

Telefónica is currently the world’s third largest mobile carrier, and an exclusivity on Pre would surely give it some credit in the battle with the rival Vodafone (the world’s second largest carrier).

  • We know, we know — even a couple weeks after MWC you’re still in new phone mode, craving the latest talk about the newest handsets. And we at Unwired View don’t disappoint.

Our friends at Mobile Review have unearthed a pair of new LG handsets that should be coming to market sometime this month, the GD330 and GB125.

While there are not many details, we’ll fill you in on what we do know, including some nice pics.

    GD330

    lg-gd330

The GD330 slider phone is slated to appear March 25, and is meant to carry on the look and style of the LG Secret. 2.2 inch screen, 2 MP camera (which means it is not necessarily an upgrade to the 5 MP camera in the Secret, just similar style), an FM radio and a pair of touch keys. Mobile Review rates the GD330 as “challenger”; sounds like it’s a winner.

Upon release it will be sold for 7500 Rubles ($200 US). No word on which markets will be selling it as of yet, but it is believed this will be targeted toward entry-level markets.

    GB125

lg-gb125The GB125 appears to have the same date of availability as the GD330, and is a entry-level clamshell with FM radio, 1.5-inch screen, and features a 950 mAh battery. It’s pretty obvious this will be basic, considering there is not even a external screen to show who is calling. We are not even certain if there is a camera in this phone, as we could not find any information discussing it nor could we see any in the pictures.

Mobile Review rates this product as mediocre, meaning it doesn’t stand out from the crowd and will likely go to emerging and entry-level markets. The GB125 will be sold for 2500 RUB ($65).

    More info as it emerges.

Stolen WinMob 6.5 Phone Wiped Remotely

Remember last week we reported that a Windows Mobile 6.5 HTC phone was stolen from a Telstra executive at MWC? We were hoping that we’d get some juicy details on the upcoming mobile operating system, since that’s what people do with stolen phones, right? It seems like we won’t be getting much information though, as a staff from Microsoft has stated that they remotely wiped all traces of the operating system and user data from the device as soon as it was reported pickpocketed. Good for Microsoft, bad for us who are impatient.

  • Palm Pre shows up on European websites

Although a GSM Palm Pre was showcased during MWC 2009, a release date for it was not given.

Well, we still don’t know when the smartphone’s GSM version will be launched, but we can tell you that Palm has added it to its European websites.

So now the Sunnyvale-based manufacturer presents the Pre as coming soon in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. No pricing details yet, but you should know that, in the US, Sprint is said to offer the Pre for $149 or $199 when bought with a 2-yr contract agreement.

    palm-pre2

(It looks like Palm forgot to paint GSM/HSDPA instead of EV-DO above the handset’s display)

Most probably, the Palm Pre will be available across Europe starting this spring. Until then, visit Palm’s regional websites in the UK, France, Germany, Italy or Spain – and you can subscribe for notifications regarding the smartphone’s release.
