Sony Ericsson W995a approved by the FCC

The North American version of Sony Ericsson W995, namely the W995a, was recently approved by the FCC – which means the phone might be soon launched in the US and Canada.

Codenamed Sony Ericsson Hikaru, the W995 / W995a is SE’s second handset that has an 8MP photo camera. Despite this, it’s not a Cyber-shot phone, but a Walkman one.

So, besides the nice photography-related features, the W995a also comes with a 3.5mm headset jack, Walkman 4.0 player, shake control, TrackID, stereo FM radio, stereo speakers and stereo Bluetooth.

No word yet if the W995a will be picked by a North American carrier (AT&T, Rogers?), or if it will be sold unlocked. In the second case, the slider will probably be quite expensive.

  • Samsung M2510 – low-end music phone

Alongside Samsung’s first Android smartphone and the company’s new touchscreen handset line-up, the Samsung M2510 may not look that impressive.

And that’s logical, since we’re talking about an entry-level slider, targeted at users who don’t want to spend too much on a music-oriented handset

The M2510 comes with some funky music-dedicated keys, a small alphanumeric keypad and a 2 inch QVGA display. Also, it has MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth, USB and a VGA photo camera.

The phone looks really nice, and this will probably help it stand out.

No details yet on when Samsung M2510 will hit the market, and neither on its retail price (but this will surely not be a high one).

  • Samsung

Although Samsung’s Android intentions are not a secret anymore, the South Korean giant has still not announced any handset powered by Google’s open source OS.

Well, not officially, because today, during an online event held in Amsterdam, Samsung showcased what seems to be its very first Android smartphone.

The available image shows a full-touch device with rounded edges and some buttons on the lower side. Sadly, the picture quality is simply awful, but hey, at least we now know the handset’s overall aspect.

Details about the features packed by Samsung into its first Android device are scarce. It’s said it has a responsive capacitive touchscreen (of unknown resolution), quad-band GSM connectivity, HSDPA / HSUPA connectivity, a photo camera and memory expansion slot.

    samsung-android-phone

Stuff like Google Maps, Gmail and advanced Web browsing capabilities should also be in there – since the smartphone is an Android one.

The handset will most probably be released in Europe and the US, but for the moment there’s no clear info about this.

  • You may know Emgeton for its digital music players, but the Czech-based company also makes mobile phones.

Its newest handset is Emgeton Enzo, a 3G candybar that kind of looks like Sony Ericsson’s C902.

Unlike the SE phone, the Enzo doesn’t come with an advanced photo camera.

Instead, it has a Qualcomm / Philips chipset that allows you to use two SIM cards “simultaneously and completely independently of each other”.

    emgeton-enzo-1

Here are most of the features and specs the Emgeton Enzo offers:

    • 2.2 inch TFT display with 240 x 320 pixels and 260k colors
    • Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity (900/1800/1900)
    • HSDPA 2100 connectivity (only for the first SIM card)
    • Bluetooth
    • MP3 / video player
    • E-mail
    • 2MP camera
    • VGA camera for video calls
    • 50MB of internal memory
    • MicroSD card support, up to 4GB
    • Talk time: up to 5 hours
    • Stand-by time: up to 10 days
    • 117 x 49 x 16.5 mm
    • 109 grams

    emgeton-enzo-2

Emgeton Enzo should be available starting April (in the Czech Republic, at least), retailing at 7,990 CZK (300 Euros or $388).

  • Motorola i465 press photo leaked

Remember that Motorola i465 iDEN phone, which showed off its full QWERTY keyboard in a blurry picture about a month ago?

Well, it turns out that Moto has revamped it and probably wants to officially release it any time soon.

The i465 didn’t look too attractive last time we saw it, but now we have a press photo of it – and I must say the handset is really interesting, having a fairly nice design for an iDEN device.

Feature-wise, the phone is said to have Bluetooth 2.0, a photo camera (VGA, apparently) and Web browser (with a dedicated key). Plus, of course, Push to Talk capabilities.

    motorola-i465

No word yet on when Motorola will actually launch the i465, but this should happen via Sprint Nextel in the US.

  • A new Motorola ROKR phone has just appeared in some leaked photos, looking pretty good and casting a ray of light on Moto’s future.

The leaked handset doesn’t have a name for the moment. However, it resembles the Motorola E10 Texel, which was first spotted back in the autumn of 2007 but never got the chance to be officially announced – thus now it’s probably cancelled.

If we speculate a bit, this new phone could be called Motorola E11 or Motorola E12.

Anyway, regardless of its name, the handset looks like this:

    motorola-rokr-1

    motorola-rokr-2

    motorola-rokr-3

    motorola-rokr-4

Its display seems to be a touchscreen with a resolution higher than the standard 240 x 320 pixels one. What’s almost sure is that those three keys situated right under the display are touch-sensitive.

The handset’s photo camera looks like it’s a 3.2MP one.

Other details about this new Moto ROKR phone are currently missing, but, hopefully, Motorola will announce it soon.

  • Although only in the second day of MWC 2009, it did happen after all: Nokia has officially announced its very first 8 Megapixel handset, the Nokia N86.

Its full name is Nokia N86 8MP and, as we’ve already told you, it’s an Nseries smartphone that comes with a dual-slider design, resembling the already-available N85.

Of course, the main attraction of N86 is its photo camera. Those 8 Megapixels rely on wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens that allow users to take panoramic pictures / sharp photos, even in low-light conditions.

The camera also has a dual-LED flash and a fast mechanical shutter, which should make images less blurry.

Furthermore, you can geotag photos and record video in VGA mode at 30 fps.

    • 2.6 inch AMOLED non-touchscreen, scratch-resistant display with 240 x 320 pixels and 16 million colors
    • Symbian S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2
    • GPS, A-GPS
    • Built-in compass
    • Wi-Fi
    • HTML browser
    • Full Ovi integration

Nokia N86 8MP will be available starting the second quarter of 2009. Its price? 375 Euros ($473), before taxes and subsidies – not that much for an 8MP smartphone. Or is it?

Via Press release (Nokia’s press section seems to be down for the moment).

  • Samsung Propel Pro to hit AT

AT&T’s Samsung Propel may be a freshly-released handset, but that doesn’t mean the blue and white carrier can’t think of a successor for it.

Successor which is apparently called Samsung Propel Pro. And since the device has such a moniker, it’s only natural for it to come with more features than the original Propel.

Sadly, details about those features are scant.

However, BGR says that the Propel Pro is a 3G smartphone running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard and bringing an optical joystick. Plus, of course, a sliding QWERTY keyboard.

    samsung-propel-pro

    samsung-propel-pro-2

If the new Propel also has a good photo camera and, maybe, Wi-Fi too, then it will surely look attractive to many of AT&T’s customers.

Now let’s hope it won’t be long until the smartphone gets to be officially presented.

  • A Motorola phone with a QWERTY keyboard is certainly not something you’ve never seen before, but when that phone is also an iDEN one, well, then we’ve got something special.

And the new Motorola i465 is exactly that: an iDEN handset with a QWERTY keyboard.

There’s nothing official about the i465 for the moment, but an image with it has just been unveiled by Engadget.

The phone looks kind of weird, perhaps because a small display can’t look “normal” when paired with a QWERTY keyboard.
    motorola-i465

Regarding the features of Motorola i465, the only known ones are Bluetooth 2.0 and a 2001-like VGA photo camera. Release date and pricing details are obviously not known yet.

  • The Federal Communications Commission has recently approved a new Motorola phone, a clamshell that appears with the FCC ID IHDP56JM2.

Unfortunately, the handset’s official name is not known for the moment, and neither are details about its release.

What we do know is that the new clamshell seems to be a mid-end device. It has external music dedicated keys, Bluetooth, a photo camera (probably of at least 2MP) and a flat alphanumeric keyboard.

Here’s what the phone looks like:

Apparently, there will be two versions of the phone available: one with 800 / 1900 MHz CDMA connectivity, and one with support for MetroPCS and Cricket’s 1700 MHz AWS frequencies.

Motorola will probably announce the clamshell in the near future and we’ll be here to let you know when this happens.
