Just another Cellphones News weblog

Alongside the 8MP Sony Ericsson CS8 (aka C905a), T-Mobile USA will also launch the CS5 – another camera phone made by SE.

Apparently, Sony Ericsson CS5 is a North American version of the C903 Cyber-shot (pictured below), which we first saw back in February.

In consequence, T-Mo’s users should expect the CS5 to come with a 5MP dual-LED flash camera, a QVGA display, 3G, GPS and TV out.

According to CellPhoneSignal, T-Mobile will release the Sony Ericsson CS8 on June 24, while the CS5 should hit the shelves on July 8.

No word yet on pricing, but the CS8 will most probably be more expensive than the CS5.

  • Sony Ericsson W995a approved by the FCC

The North American version of Sony Ericsson W995, namely the W995a, was recently approved by the FCC – which means the phone might be soon launched in the US and Canada.

Codenamed Sony Ericsson Hikaru, the W995 / W995a is SE’s second handset that has an 8MP photo camera. Despite this, it’s not a Cyber-shot phone, but a Walkman one.

So, besides the nice photography-related features, the W995a also comes with a 3.5mm headset jack, Walkman 4.0 player, shake control, TrackID, stereo FM radio, stereo speakers and stereo Bluetooth.

No word yet if the W995a will be picked by a North American carrier (AT&T, Rogers?), or if it will be sold unlocked. In the second case, the slider will probably be quite expensive.

  • The Sony Ericsson C510 Cyber-shot is not the newest SE phone in town, but it’s still a 2009 handset – it was announced back in January, at the same time with the W508 Walkman clamshell.

The North American version of C510, namely the Sony Ericsson C510a, has just appeared on SE Canada’s official website. And since it’s a GSM/HSDPA phone, it’s very likely that it will be launched by Rogers – Canada’s only GSM carrier (well, Fido’s a GSM operator too, but it belongs to Rogers anyway).

Of course, the exact release date of the C510a is not known, but Canadian mobile users will probably be able to buy it in the next few months, maybe at about the same time with the Android-powered HTC Dream and HTC Magic.

In case you don’t know yet, the specs and features of Sony Ericsson C510 / C510a include:

    • 2.2 inches TFT scratch-resistant display with 262K colors and 240 x 320 pixels
    • 3.2 MP camera with autofocus, face detection, geotagging and LED flash
    • Slide in lens cover
    • Illuminated imaging shortcuts
    • Auto-rotation
    • Google Maps
    • Access NetFront browser
    • Email
    • Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
    • Bluetooth 2.0
    • Media player
    • FM radio with RDS
    • 100MB of internal memory
    • Memory Stick Micro M2 cards support, up to 8GB
    • 107 x 47 x 12.5 mm
    • 92 grams

Sony Ericsson C510 retails for about €200 ($272) in Europe, so the Canadian C510a shouldn’t be too expensive.

Sony Ericsson CS8 Visits The FCC

It’s not real surprise, but it’s still pleasant to hear news that a variant of Sony Ericsson’s C905 will be reaching America via T-Mobile. Dubbed the CS8, the device will sport an 8.1-megapixel camera and also support T-Mobile’s 3G bands. You can expect this megapixel monster to be available around June 24th. You might want to start saving some of those pennies in the meantime.

Ericsson Ready To Offer Cash Injection

We know that Sony Ericsson isn’t enjoying the current economic turmoil too much, and with a rather dismal quarter, Ericsson seems like it’s trying to steady the boat, with its CEO, Carl-Henric Svanberg, mentioning that the parent company is willing to pour cash into the joint venture if necessary. Of course, Sony Ericsson can’t always be hoping to get easy cash from Ericsson, so it would also be best if Sony Ericsson could ride out the storm on its own.

Sony Ericsson W995 Visits The FCC

Sony Ericsson’s W995 has decided to take a trip to the FCC for approval, which is certainly good news for those who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this phone. Specifications wise, it’s certainly a good phone, since it sports a 8.1-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal memory, 2.6-inch QVGA scratch-resistant screen, aGPS, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers and Walkman player 4.0. The bad news however, is that there isn’t any mention of the 850/1800/1900 MHz WCDMA bands that we’re looking for, so this might actually be a European variant of the device. Hopefully we’ll be seeing the North American variant, the W995a, sometime soon.

  • ZTE to become the world

Last time we checked, the world’s first five handset manufacturers were Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

But this above is the top for the fourth quarter of 2008, and 2009 might bring a new phone maker into the spotlight. That’s ZTE, one of China’s largest telecommunications equipment makers.

DigiTimes quotes “market observers in Taiwan” who say ZTE has shipped 45 million phones last year, and is likely to enter the top 5 handset makers during 2009.

If the Chinese company indeed reached the top five, it’s either Motorola or Sony Ericsson the manufacturer that’ll fall on the sixth place (in Q4 2008, they shipped 19.2 and 24.2 million phones, respectively).

    zte-t7

(this is T7 – one of ZTE’s handsets made for Australia’s Telstra)

ZTE currently has lots of agreements with various carriers around the world, including Vodafone, T-Mobile, Hutchison’s 3 and Telstra. It mainly offers entry-level phones, but it also has Windows Mobile and touchscreen devices.

    Sony Ericsson T707 With Sharapova

Sony Ericsson has announced its latest fashion phone and will have professional tennis payer Maria Sharapova as its ambassador for the phone. The T707 is a clamshell phone that lights up when calls or messages are received, those colors can also be customized to represent specific callers. One of the more interesting features of the phone is the ability to silence calls or the alarm by just waving their hand over the phone, which will be detected thanks to proximity sensors. Themes of the phone can automatically change depending on the time of the day. The T707a will have quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA support. Aside from that, it will also have a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, video capture, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio and GPS. You can expect this phone to be available in Q2 of 2009.
