When we first heard about Research in Motion’s own app store, we thought it would be named BlackBerry Application Storefront. In fact, this was the name presented by RIM itself.
Apparently, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer changed its mind, as now we hear the app store is in fact officially called BlackBerry App World – and that’s actually a good name.
It looks like BlackBerry App World will go live in a couple of hours, at 10 PM Eastern Time, and it will be accessible at this address (for the moment, there’s nothing there, of course).

No details yet about the applications that RIM allows in its App World, but we’ll surely hear more about this pretty soon.

Nokia’s own app store has just got a name and a launch date, obviously following a MWC 2009 announcement.
Named Ovi Store, the one-stop shop (as Nokia calls it) will not only include applications, but also games, widgets, videos, podcasts and other types of personalized content for Symbian S40 and Symbian S60 handsets.
The service will be available starting May for most of Nokia’s devices. The N97 Nseries flagship will be the first to come with a storefront for Ovi Store – this should happen in June, when Nokia plans to release the smartphone.
Starting March, developers and content providers will be able to upload their apps, via publish.ovi.com

Nokia says that Ovi Sore is not like the other mobile storefronts on the market, as it allows user to access content based on their location and “social connections”.
The company expects Ovi Store to gather around 300 million customers by 2012.

Developers who are interested in RIM’s BlackBerry application storefront will be happy to hear that RIM is now accepting applications for evaluation. With Apple’s AppStore’s ever-increasing in popularity, it’s no surprise to see that other companies are busy trying to get their own version of the AppStore out as soon as possible.
